‘Molli and Max in the Future’ SXSW 2023 Film Review
by Jim Puliafico

An imaginative and entertaining sci-fi romantic comedy (that’s right) that will leave you laughing and swooning in equal measure. Written and directed by Michael Lukk Litwak, the film takes the audience on a wild ride through space and time as we follow the intersecting paths of two characters over the course of 12 years, 4 planets, 3 dimensions, and one space-cult.

Zosia Mamet is remarkable as Molli, a free-spirited gem hunter who finds herself repeatedly colliding with Max (Aristotle Athari), a fellow space traveler. The chemistry between the two leads is palpable, and their encounters range from awkward and hilarious to heartwarming and romantic. As their relationship evolves over time and across different dimensions, we see them learn more about each other and themselves, making for a satisfying and emotionally resonant journey.

What sets this film apart from other low budget indies is its impressive blend of practical and digital effects, which create a fully-realized and visually stunning world for the characters to inhabit. The attention to detail and creative use of technology helps to make this other-worldly universe feel believable and immersive. But ultimately, it is the film’s heartfelt exploration of love, destiny, and self-discovery that will stay with audiences long after the credits roll.

Overall, ‘Molli & Max In The Future’ is a delightful and original film that deserves to be seen. With its memorable characters, imaginative storytelling, and impressive visuals, it is sure to be a hit with both sci-fi fans and rom-com enthusiasts alike. If you’re looking for a fun and heartwarming escape, this film is definitely worth checking out.
